I have just finished the wonderful study of James by Beth Moore. She is one of my favorite Bible teachers and this was the second time I did this study of James. She takes this book that can be so convicting on so many levels and makes it not only challenging but inspires us to go deeper and walk the walk not just talk the talk.
Now it is time to open God’s Word on my little blog and see what He tells us about who He is. I have decided I will take a look at some of the Psalms. I love this book of the Bible that allows us to see the very heart of God since so many are written by David, a man after God’s own heart. I am excited to dig into God’s Word in the desire to grow in knowing Him. I hope you will join me and share with us what God reveals to you from the Psalms we look at. I love sharing God’s Word with others and learning more about who He is from what He speaks to your heart too.
We won’t necessarily go through all of them. There will be times we focus on a complete Psalm and times we will only look at parts of a Psalm. They are so very rich with life-giving, life impacting treasures that I don’t want to rush it. Ready? I am so excited to begin! Lets get going!
We are going to look at this Psalm from the bottom up. Since our focus is what it says about who God is I feel we need to start with verse 6. The first 5 verses are really about the results of who He is in our lives. We will also look at that but for right now we will just focus our attention on what verse 6 tells us about God. I love that my God is a God who is watching over. What a blessing that is! He doesn’t miss one thing that is going on in my life! The addition of the word over changes it so from just watching. If He was a God who was just observing what is going on that would be one thing but He is a God who is watching over me and mine. That indicates care and concern to me. I am so very grateful that He is always there taking care and watching over!
There is a qualification of the watching over that He does. It says, “For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.” God’s watching over is for the righteous. So who are the righteous? Is that only those who are doing everything perfectly? Are they the good ones who seem to have it all together and do it right? No my precious friends. 2 Corinthians 5:21 tells us, “God made Him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.” Through the death of our precious Lord Jesus on the cross for our sins, we who believe in Him as our Savior are righteous through Him. Not on our own. Not of our doing. Only through the gift of grace given to any who choose to take it. I can barely get my mind wrapped around it but am so blessed and grateful that I can read this Psalm and know I am one of the righteous my God is watching over. If you should have any doubts at all that you are also one of the righteous this talks about, please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org and we will talk about it.
Back to Psalm 1. Though the first 3 verses are talking about a man who is blessed and what his life is like it is still about who God is. Verse 6 starts with the word for. What it says to me is that this man’s life and the life of the wicked in verses 4 & 5 is a result of God’s watching over. Lets spend some time seeing what the result is for the righteous:
- Verse 1 tells us he is blessed and makes good choices. He doesn’t spend time with the wicked, sinners and mockers.
- Verse 2 says he delights in the Word of God and doesn’t just read it but thinks about it day and night.
- Verse 3 gives a picture of his life being like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields fruit in season and that stays full of life.
- Verse 3 also tells us that whatever he does prospers.
I love this! We have a God who watches over us and interacts in our life to give us abundant life. The God who spoke the world in place loves us and cares about us! He blesses us and enables us to bear fruit for Him. The fact that we are opening His Word to search out who He is so that we can know Him better brings life-giving, life changing, life impacting results that only He can bring.
I am so glad you have joined us on this journey! I so desire to hear what God has given you as you read through Psalm 1. Please share your comments so that we can all learn from each other. The sharing of God’s Word always expands our knowledge of who He is. Until next time keep on opening the Word of God and growing in knowing who He is! Love you guys!
