Genesis 2:18-20

Dear Lord, how very fitting that today a couple of days after my 45th wedding anniversary I open your Word to see what you have for me today and it is about your seeing that it was not good for Adam to be alone so you made a helper suitable for him.  Lord, one thing I am so very sure of is that it is your miracle that we have been married as long as we have.  I know that many times in the 45 year span of our marriage I have not been a helper suitable for him.  Not because that was not your intention but out of my selfishness and human nature.  Thank you that he is a patient man and did not chuck our marriage due to my unsuitability at various times.  Thank you that I did not either.  Lord, you have given us the gift of a long marriage and I want the next however many years you give us to be what you designed it to be.  I know part of that is up to him but I leave that part in your hands as I have no control over him and his choices but I do mine.  Lord, teach me as I read these verses how to be that suitable helper to my dear husband that you intended for me to be. Though I will never do it perfectly and being 100% suitable all the time is probably not possible this side of heaven, I want to know what you planned for me to be when you created Eve.  So Lord, show me, teach me, replace my desires with yours as I read this section.

Verses 19-20 tell us you brought all of the animals you had created from the dust of the earth, as you had Adam, to him to name.  This was a real privilege Lord!  You let Adam name them. It makes me smile to think of this.  The picture I see is one of sweet communion between you the creator and Adam the one you created in your own image walking through your beautiful hand planted garden together and naming all of the animals. I also laugh that you in your mighty wisdom didn’t wait to name the animals until you created Eve.  They might never have gotten named!  I also see that in verse 20b it says, “But for Adam no suitable helper was found.”  I think you made it clear to Adam that he was different from the animals you had created.  Since each animal is so very different in the way they look and act I could see where Adam might think he was just another one of them.  He could have thought he was a different species but just an animal too.  You must have created male and female animals but when he had named them all Adam saw clearly he was different.  He was alone.

Dear Lord, thank you for creating man in your image and then creating woman to be his helper.  I love being a woman!  I love that I wasn’t created to just be his wife for his pleasure but to be his helper.  When I looked up the original word ezer guess what?  It means helper!!!  This one is pretty clear!  I was created by God to be my husband’s helper.  So I decided to check out Webster’s Dictionary on line.  That expanded my thinking just a tad bit.  Here is what I learned from that little exercise:

  • Helper: One that helps; especially: a relatively unskilled worker who assists a skilled worker usually by manual labor.  Some of the Synonyms were aid, assistant, helpmate, helpmeet, mate and sidekick.

Wow!  I have so much to learn dear Lord!  I never looked at some of the manual labor I do in our relationship as doing it because I am helping Larry.  (Laundry, housework, etc.) Now I can really understand being unskilled in knowing just how to do this thing called being helper to my husband.  Dear Lord, thank you for bringing me this from your Word.  I am so blessed that you always have what I need to hear and prompt me to think about things I need to think about.  I really need to spend time on this Lord.  I do desire to be the wife you want me to be.  I so desire to be all you created me to be in every aspect of my life.  Thank you!  Love you Lord.

I would love to hear what Ronni or anyone else has to say about what God has in His Word for them in these same scriptures.  Love to all!

Happy Anniversary Larry!

What a blessing I have been given by God in my husband Larry!  Thank you Lord for 45 years today.  Though life has had its ups and downs I am so blessed to have Larry as my partner in and through it all.  Thank you Lord!  I so love you!

Genesis 2:16

Today as I look at this scripture I see God giving a command to man.  In Genesis 1:28 He tells man to be fruitful and increase in number and to fill the earth, subdue it and rule over the living creatures.  This is different. The Revelle Bible Dictionary on its section on commandments mentions on page 236, “Some view God’s laws, edicts, and statutes in a cold, legalistic way or as a method of earning merit.  But the Scriptures set forth the commandment as a guideline intended for our own benefit as well as the honor of God.”  The Hebrew word used here is tsavah.  It is used in various places as, to lay charge, give charge, give orders, instructed and ordained.

So what does Genesis 2:16 tell us about our God?  It tells us that God gave this command to man, a rule for life living, an order from a loving God for man’s own good.  He said “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die.”  Oh dear God!  Thank you that you love us enough to give us life rules to live by.  These are not just for us to be controlled by but for our own good.  This one I believe shows your heart for yourself too.  You created us to be in relationship with you for eternity.  Disobedience to this command in chapter 3 shows that death and a break in relationship due to sin did happen.  You wanted man to have what now you give through the death of Jesus on the cross for us, eternal life in relationship with you.  It was for man that you gave this command and I believe for yourself as well.  You my dear God created us for that relationship with you.  How very awesome is that!!! What a mighty, loving God you are.  Thank you that you desire a relationship with the men you have created.  Thank you that you entrust us with your beautiful creation. Thank you that you have work for us to do.  Thank you that we have a purpose chosen by you!  I so love you!

Genesis 2:15

Lord, today I look at this next section after you created the Garden of Eden. I can’t help but think as I read it that when you created that beautiful place you had a plan to put man there to live. You created this place of such amazing beauty for Adam to enjoy as he lived each day with you. You also in placing him there had a purpose for his existence. You didn’t create us just to take up space or to be just one of so many humans but have purposed what you have for us to do. For Adam it was to, “work it (Eden) and take care of it.” When you placed Adam there you had a job for him. He would work the garden and had the responsibility of taking care of it.

Thank you God, that you have a plan and purpose for our lives. I love Jeremiah 29:11-13:
“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord. Plans to proper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.”

Though this was for the nation of Israel, I believe it shows your heart my precious God for all mankind. I know your plan for us is a good one. I know it is your heart’s desire that we talk to you and come before you wanting to know you with all our hearts. I know that you, the God of creation who spoke the world in place, want us to know you and want to reveal yourself to us. I know that, because of this journey you and I have been on for 50 years now. You have revealed yourself to me over and over again in mighty and small ways. Thank you that you allow me the awesome privilege of loving and being loved by you. Thank you for the peace and assurance I have that we have an eternity to love each other. Thank you that you allow me to do things with you that I could never do on my own. Thank you for making me so aware that though in the world I live in I am but a tiny speck to you my precious God I am your beloved child. I stand in awe of you today! You take my breath away and bring me to tears. I so love you!

Lord, I also look today at the fact that you did not just gift Adam with the garden and a job but you would hold him accountable. He had the responsibility of looking after what you had given him. This makes me stop and think about my life and how I am accountable to you for those things you have given me. You know how very much I love my family, friends and the other blessings you have given me. I want to be sure that I am taking care of them and my sphere of living in a way that pleases you my God. I want to keep in touch with you daily and I pray that you make me very aware of the things I need to do better or differently. Thank you that you won’t allow me to be a spoiled selfish child but love me enough to expect me to live my life in a way that pleases you. Thank you that though I can’t do it alone I can do all things in Christ who strengthens me. I love you Lord! Thank you for the blessings of being able to see you ever more clearly as we continue to study your Word.

I would love to hear what God is doing in the lives of those who may read this today. Please share what God gives you from this verse in Genesis or where you are reading today.
