Genesis 1:21-31

Dear Lord the sixth day of creation was one of speaking living creatures according to their kind: Livestock, creatures that move along the ground, wild animals and then man in your own image. First you created this collection of animals and reptiles and then when it came to man you tell of your purpose in creating him:

In verses 26-28 you repeat twice that you created man in your image. Verse 26 says in our likeness. Then in verse 27 it says, “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.” What an awesome privilege we have Lord! To be created in your likeness, in your image! You the God of perfection, power and might chose to create us like you! I know that our sin nature clouds and distorts that now but I think of when Adam and Eve were created your intention was that they would be like you. Not God…that could never be, but it says to me that you intended for them to reflect who you are. As your beloved through the blood of Christ you again give us the awesome privilege of being your children, and able to reflect who you are through the dear Holy Spirit. Not God…not even 100% reflecting God but glimpses of you!

Thank you Dear Lord for being a loving God who shows us who you are in the people you create. The diversity in physical characteristics, personalities, etc., just expands who we see you to be. Psalm 139:13 tells us you still knit each of us in our mothers’ wombs. You are still doing what you did in Genesis 1. You are still creating us in your image and your likeness. Just like a beautiful garden of different flowers, you create us unique and all are beautiful! All are in your image! I love you Lord! This Lord shows us how infinite are your attributes. How beautiful you are! I can’t even grasp it or comprehend it.

Then in verse 28 you bless your creation again Lord. This time it was a blessing on man and woman. The blessing consisted of these things:

  • Be fruitful and increase in number
  • Fill the earth and subdue it
  • Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground

Then in verse 29 you give a gift to man, woman and the beasts and birds and all of the creatures moving on the ground. “I give you every seed bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air and all the creatures that move on the ground – everything that has the breath of life in it – I give every green plant for food. And it was so.”

Wow Lord! Thank you that you are a God that provides and not just any old thing but in abundance and specifically what we need. I find it interesting that the food you gave man was different than food you gave the animals. You specify for man…seed bearing plants from all over the world and fruit with seeds in them from trees. That sounds like grains and fruits and vegetables. The animals were just to have green plants. We sure have come so far from that now. We feed our animals grains (not to mention hormones and who knows what else) to fatten them up and we eat the animals. Lord I have never been a vegetarian but have eaten less and less meat through the years. My sister Barb has made me aware of how awful animals are treated in growing them fat and then the inhumane way we slaughter them makes me sad. I will continue on this study to see where it changes Lord. For now my focus comes back to you. Thank you Lord for creating food in abundance and variety for us and for all of the creatures you created. You are an amazing God!

Verse 31 is interesting to me Lord. It says, “God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning – the sixth day.” On that sixth day Lord you surveyed all you and created and declared it VERY good. I look back through this chapter one of Genesis and see where you commented on your handiwork as you went along:

  • Verse 9 – on the third day after you separated the water from dry land to make land and seas you saw that it was good.
  • Verse 18 – on the fourth day when you created light for the world by placing the sun, moon and stars in place you saw that it was good.
  • Verse 21 – on the fifth day after creating creatures in the sea and birds in the sky you saw that is was good.
  • Verse 25 – on the 6th day after creating living creatures such as, livestock , creatures that move along the ground, and wild animals, you saw that it was good.
  • Verse 31 – now Lord, also on this sixth day, after creating men and women in your image to rule over the other living creatures and then creating food to sustain all the living creatures it says, “God saw all that he had made, and it was very good.

Thank you Lord for being a God who is creative beyond all I can imagine. Thank you for being a God who is not prideful but is able to create and see in His creation that it was good and very good. Thank you for caring about your creation in such amazing fashion when you created food to sustain the people and animals alike. You created such an abundant array of grains, fruits, nuts, berries, green plants for them to all feast on. We still have that today. We have tainted so much of it with pesticides and fertilizers in our prideful way of wanting bigger and better than what you have provided. I am sure when you created them in the perfect world they were even better than our best could ever be.

Thank you Lord that you our amazing God looked down on all you created and said it was very good. What do you say now Lord when you look down? Does it make you sad that man has made such a mess of himself and the world you created? Thank you for your provision of redemption for the mess we are. I still hear through the blood of Christ and the redemption and restoration that brings, “It is very good.” Only in and through you! Thank you my precious God! Thank you!!! I so love you!
