Genesis 1: 14-19

Happy Thanksgiving!  Dear God I am so very blessed today!  I am so grateful for so many things that my heart feels ready to burst.  Thank you for my dear, precious family that I love so.  Thank you for friends that your have made family!  Thank you for loving me enough to send your precious son to die on that cross for me.  Thank you for showing me your love in the small things to allow me to trust you with the big things.  Thank you for always speaking to me through your word and interacting with me throughout the day.  I so know that you will never leave me or forsake me.  Thank you for wanting a relationship with me.  I this tiny speck of nothing is loved and adored by the awesome and mighty God of creation.  That totally blows me away!  I love you Lord!  Thank you so much!  Thank you so very much!

Ronni!  I am so glad you are studying with me.  I love how God uses the practical life things you share to make His word real to me.  Glad we can study together!

Today I was looking at Genesis 1:14-19.

Lord on this fourth day of creation you hung the sun, moon and stars in place.  In speaking of the sun and moon you said, “let them serve as signs to mark seasons and days and years, and let them be lights in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth.”

What would life be like without days, years and seasons?  It is unimaginable.  As I think about what this tells me about you it is twofold.  The first is again the reality that you are a God of order.  You took the chaos of nothingness and spoke order into it step by step.  Each thing layer upon layer created with a plan and purpose.  In the sometimes so overwhelming chaos of life this gives me such comfort.  To know that you God are a God of order and purpose gives me such peace.  You are in control and not overwhelmed or chaotic.  The second is you provide a marking of time.  You give dimension to the limitation of our time on earth.  This is so different than eternity with you as I imagine it to be.  What is time like with you dear God?  Before creation there was no day, month, or year.  Eternal life is stretching forever forward giving unending time with you. I know in revelation you tell us you will create a new earth.  Will that earth have days, months and years?  I can’t wait to see it.  Maybe that will be another study Lord.

16b gives almost a side note, “He also made the stars.”  Lord when I think of a cloudy night when you can’t see the moon or stars I imagine how very dark and frightening it would be with no moon or stars in the sky.  There is something so beautiful that gives me such hope and makes me feel so close to you when I look up into a starry sky.  Thank you for giving us the stars.  They look like you just breathed them there.  Little specks of your magnificent light sprinkled in the darkness just for us.  Verse 17 tells us your plan for the sun, moon and stars was to, “set them in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth, to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness.”  Again, there is the separation of light and darkness.  There is no darkness in you Lord.  You are a God of light, purity and holiness.

Lord, then again, I see, “And God saw that it was good.”  Thank you Lord for creating our world in a way that was pleasing to you.  As a God of perfection that shows your awesome love and care for us that you would create the world we live in to your perfect standards.  Thank you Lord!  Thank you!  I so love you!

Gen. 1:11-12

Lord as I look at this the third day of creation what I see about you is the way you created vegetation.  “Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.”  You created the original with the ability to reproduce it’s self.  Isn’t that what you plan for us in a way?  Not in the reproduction of people because it is that way in a sense too.  But, you plant seeds of you in us that are meant to be shared so that our knowledge of you doesn’t stay fallow or buried but is shared with each other.  When we believe in Jesus as Savior you come and reside in us.  You become one with us and we become one with you.  Then as you plant your seeds in the garden of our hearts we grow in you and fruit is produced in our lives.  It is not about us.  It is not ours to keep as our own.  It is meant to be shared with others as we serve you and live our lives for you.

Just as in creating vegetation you say in your word that you did it “according to their various kinds.”  Dear Lord, isn’t that like the work you do in us also?  We are all designed by you unique and different.  No two of us are alike.  Psalm 139:13-16 tell us you knit each of us by hand and planned each of our lives before we were even born!  The seeds you plant in each heart are different.  The things you sow in each life are different.  Yet your purpose in each is that you are magnified in our lives and that is shared with the world.

Dear Lord today I just thank you for being a God who loved the beauty of vegetation in creation but you went a step further.  I love the green grass and trees and the fruit and flowers they produce!  You made it so that your creation was reproduced over and over to your praise honor and glory.  Thank you for being a God who plants seeds that bear fruit in lives too.  Not only does your creation reproduce itself but you my precious God reproduce yourself in us.  That is too awesome for me to even fully comprehend! That you would want to do that is so humbling to me.  I, this nothing speck of humanity, can reflect you the awesome one true God is amazing!  That you would want to plant seeds of love, grace and goodness in me so overwhelming.  But there I go…I wanted the focus of this study to be about you.  Though part of it is always the humbling fact of what you have given to me in your salvation, grace, forgiveness and love, I want to keep my eyes focused on you alone as much as possible.

Thank you for being a reproducing God.  Thank you for making reproduction of your glory part of who you are! Thank you for planting seeds of vegetation on the earth but for also being a God who reproduces yourself by allowing us to be one with you.  Thank you for the seeds you plant in each heart that can grow a beautiful garden bearing fruit in our lives that glorify you!
